The design of submerged-arc furnaces has in the past been largely based on empirical laws. There is a need for a better fundamental knowledge of the internal operation of these plants. A method is described in this paper of plotting the electric fields, current and power distribution within a scaled-model submerged-arc furnace. The system is computer-based and provides a rapid means of controlling the model, acquiring the data, processing it and presenting the results in a graphical format. Examples of plots which may be obtained are shown.
