註釋
Vietnam Veterans' Songbook is a collection of short stories, poems, and indeed a song, centering on the experiences of soldiers in Vietnam as well as those of people connected with them. It is as much about the experience of living after combat, and living with veterans, as it is about the war experiences themselves. Gritty and traumatic at times but forward-looking and hopeful in its main thrust. It is about the Vietnam vet, but clearly much is universally applicable to veterans of any war. From the Foreward: "This book is about the challenges and choices, the frustration and reconciliation of the war experience... There is an evolution of the war-immature psyche through to the uncertain resolution of an accepting adult... The Songbook is meant to challenge the values of the smug and the indifferent and to provoke the image of attempting life after war - or of living with someone who has been to war... Despite the hurt, there is hope... This is a call for courage to change, to risk mightily but not violently. It is our intention and hope that we can transition from the American tradition that it is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees to a new dimension of working to live on our feet instead of dying on them."
