註釋
Discusses Polish-Jewish relations and the persistence of mutual negative stereotypes. Surveys Polish studies concerning Polish-Jewish relations which have appeared since 1983. Contends that the postwar non-sovereign Polish society could not reconstruct its own historical experiences, and was trapped in a "victims' syndrome". The lack of analysis of the national history after the war, and patriotic legitimization of antisemitism in Poland, were the basis for the renewal of antisemitism during the communist period. Changes in the attitude of the Polish Catholic Church occurred 25 years later than in Western Europe. Discusses traditional Christian anti-Jewish stereotypes, as well as the stereotype of the "communist Jew" ("Żydokomuna"). Refutes theories that an economic crisis was the main cause of the antisemitism and collaboration during the Holocaust. Concludes that Polish-Jewish relations in the 20th century were, and still are, characterized by a clash of stereotypical perceptions and a mutual lack of knowledge. Stresses the necessity of dialogue between Poles and Jews, in Poland and abroad.
