At first under the jurisdiction of the Toledo tribunal, the "Despacho de Corte" became independent after 1650. Describes the proceedings and powers of this special tribunal. Pp. 65-85, "Criptojudaísmo", analyzes the court's anti-Judaizing campaign in Madrid against the few Spanish Conversos and, after 1580, against Portuguese Conversos. The persecution was nourished by accusations of Judaizing, host profanation, and image desecration, and reached a climax between 1680-99 and again in 1720-30 with numerous autos-da-fé and harsh sentences, far more than against Protestants and other heretics.
