註釋
"This is the first attempt by a scholar to offer the layman and the student a readable, condensed account of the area now known as the Republic of Lebanon, and to sketch the achievements of its people through the ages. Those events and achievements were selected and interpreted which are meaningful in themselves, related to world events, and relevant to the contemporary scene. The story of the area (Phonecia) was in ancient times closely associated with Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome and Persia; in medieval times with Arabia and Islam; and in modern times with Turkey, France and England. This makes the history of Lebanon a history of a large part of the civilized world in miniature. Hitherto, Lebanon has been treated by authors together with Syria or the rest of the Arab world. In this book Lebanon is recognised as an entity, distinguished by its mountainous geography, the composition of its people, their historic experience and their dedication to democratic procedures, free enterprise and Western orientation."--Publisher's description.
