註釋A nation in crisis, divided and unsure of its future direction. A charismatic but inexperienced president, the finest orator of his generation, takes office at a time of great uncertainty. It could be the USA in 2009, but in fact the year is 1861. The slave-owning states have been defeated (by Abraham Lincoln and the newly-formed, anti-slavery Republican party) in their attempt to spread slavery across the whole country. They now try to destroy the Union by seceding from it and setting up a separate state.
