註釋In its first decade Petro-Canada grew from a collection of moderate acquisitions of existing regional companies and downstream divisions of larger petroleum companies to become the largest Canadian-owned and controlled oil company and the largest federal Crown corporation in terms of assets and revenue generation. This study examines the emergence and development of Petro-Canada, its objectives and activities, as well as how these have changed, especially due to the commercial mandate given the Corporation with the 1984 Progressive Conservative election win, and b̀ottom-line' profit considerations. The study analyzes the Corporation's impact on stock prices of securities in the energy industry, and discusses its financial performance. Also discusses the problem of a Crown corporation acting as a separate venture and as an agent of the federal Government, making overall policy recommendations.
