In the week before Christmas in 1944, the men of the US 106th Infantry Division were holding part of the front line that protruded into Nazi Germany when Hitler launched his massive Wacht am Rhein offensive. in the opening days of what became knows as The Battle of the Bulge, in on of the worst winters in living memory, many GIs would die fighting. Thousands would find themselves surrounded, out of food, low on ammunitions, and forced to make a choice: surrender, or attempt a perilous escape. Most laid down their arms. For some, the fight had only just begun.
