Packaging and the Environment: Compatible Bedfellows Or Mutual Antagonists? a Case Study
註釋The functions of packaging are briefly outlined and the essential need for packaging to sustain life on earth is described. Recent technological developments in packaging with particular reference to paperboard cartons are discussed. These include new methods of bleaching to avoid dioxin productionand reduce the environmental impact of bleach plant effluents. When these developments are coupled with the use of sustainable forests for the raw material and the latest technology for the handing of post-consumer waste, it can be demonstrated that packaging systems which have minimal environmental impact can be developed and used commercially. It is concluded that it is possible to develop packaging systems which have minimal environmental impact, and therefore packaging and the environmental are not mutual antagonists but compatible bedfellows.
