註釋
Although many of us have long known the outlines of the lives of the patriarchs of the Bible, they remain largely obscured in a mystic antiquity. Then comes a writer with telephoto vision who brings these people of olden days into closer focus, and we perceive that, from Abraham to the apostles, they were men and women such as we are. This is what Dr. Gibbs has done in these unique biographical sketches, probing into the common motives that prompt human action and pointing out hidden spiritual lessons. With engaging narrative appeal, the author reconstructs the environment and social mores in which these characters of the Bible lived, so that God's dealings with evildoers and His blessings on the faithful overcomer are seen not to be arbitrary or capricious, but just and equitable. As a result the great heroes of faith are seen in a new dimension, and greater wonder is evoked at God's love and long-suffering. No matter how familiar the reader may be with the stories of the men and women who walk through the pages of this book, the vital new perspective of the author will provide delightful hours of meditation and re-evaluation of what Bible teaches about vice and virtue. - Chapter 1: Plot and Counterplot: Issac, Jacob, and Rebekah Chapter 2: And We Shall See: Joseph at Dothan Chapter 3: Tne Tortured Souls: Joseph's Brothers Chapter 4: A Shadow Picture: Joseph in Egypt Chapter 5: The Fragrance of Kindness: Boaz and Ruth Chapter 6: Two Ways That May Not Meet Again: Ruth, Orpah, and Naomi Chapter 7: Battle-seasoned Friendship: David and Jonathan Chapter 8: The Military Man: Joab Chapter 9: Isaiah at the Ball Park?
