註釋
The study tries to answer the question on the feasibility of the Philippine claim to Sabah, also known as North Borneo. The researcher has decided to ask this question, seeing as how the Philippine government has been shunting this issue aside for the past several decades without doing anything about it. This study covers the history, legal basis, and the many previous, if short-lived, attempts to regain this territory, which supposedly belongs to the Philippines by virtue of a lease contract between the Sultan of Sulu and the British North Borneo Company, dated January 22, 1878.This study includes research on the Philippine side of the story, culled mostly from previous published works, as well as an interview with former Ambassador and undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Manuel Yan. This then ends with the researcher’s personal opinion on the matter of the claim — the researcher thinks the claim should be dropped, since the country is not gaining anything helpful or substantial from it at this time.
