Cultures of Tolypothrix tenuis and Mastigocladus laminosus incubated in an N-free atmosphere showed a prominent decrease in the level of chlorophyll and phycobilin pigments. However, nitrogenase activity increased significantly within 24 h. This increase in nitrogenase activity in the absence of N2 was due to fresh synthesis of enzyme protein. [Authors' abstract].
