As Christian fiction, the story looks at reasons for Maori resistance to Christian faith. "Children" presents accurate history of the 1930s and the beginning of World War II. It also is a story for young people, who can identify with Patara, Roka, Maiki, and Moira as they face crises and change. This epic story also shares the struggle of an interracial love story.
