註釋This report summarizes research definitions and child welfare models for the prevention & treatment of child neglect. The scope of the literature review presented is limited to relevant research published between 1993 and 1998. It begins with a brief history of child maltreatment research and the inclusion of neglect as a topic for serious investigation. This is followed by a review of definitions of neglect and the role of such factors as severity, chronicity, and culture in the definition of neglect. Section 3 reviews forms of child neglect, including physical & emotional neglect, failure to thrive, and other forms. The fourth section covers the different conceptual models of child maltreatment that have been developed by researchers, arranged under such approaches as medical, sociological, and developmental. Section 5 review research on causes of child maltreatment in three categories: personalistic, economic, and environmental. The final sections review literature on the effects of child neglect on children and on the prevention & treatment of child neglect. The appendix includes information on determining a child neglect index.
