M. Martin Papers
註釋Letter, 29 Nov. 1860 (Columbia, S.C.), to [James] Lawson commenting on his recent book of poems sent by "our mutual friend, Dr. [William Gilmore] Simms," the difficulties of presiding over "The Female College" with her husband, William Henry Martin, reporting the prosperity the institution enjoyed under "my husband's wise & prudent oversight," her inability to write poetry because of "toil & care," the political situation, sectional tensions and anticipation of secession, and the rumor that "Simms ... will lay aside the pen for the sword ... I still hope for peace."
