Born on the Isle of Pines, Cuba, in 1920 to a Scots father and a German-American mother, he was educated at Dollar Academy in Scotland, served in World War II in the Cameronian Scottish Rifles, surviving two Burma campaigns and duty in India, trained Jamaican troops after the war, and finally settled in the U.S. There he met and Married Kitsy Doe, a U.S. Navy officer, and thus began a lifetime full of friendship, travel, golf and a career with Geico.
