註釋
Joseph Liebman comes from a long line of wanderers. According to some Torah commentators, the wanderings in the wilderness were themselves a mitzvah. After all, Jews are commanded to remember the exodus from Egypt. It is hoped that the wanderings recorded in this book will be memorable as well. In a previous age, Joseph Liebman may have been described as "an innocent." He didn't set out to meet a Bedouin patriarch with a camel-tooth necklace, a Wagnerian headmistress of a gothic school, or a Jerusalem doctor whose hearing test included a message from the Torah-he met these people precisely because he wasn't looking for them. They were simply part of his journey, which he set down in letters to his family and friends. Because of this he might also, in another age, have been called "a man of letters." But never a man of emails. After reading this book, you will understand why.
