註釋John Adair M'Dowell went to California in 1849 and settled in Monterey. In 1851, he was elected mayor of Monterey and then returned to Iowa in 1852. John Edwards went to California in 1849. He was elected as an alcalde before the state government was formed. In 1852 he moved to Iowa. The brief biographies concentrated on their activities during the Civil War.
