註釋
Gardner Murphy (1895-1979) was one of the most beloved and revered psychologists in the mid-twentieth century, as well as an inspiring leader in psychical research. His creativity, integrative powers, idea generation, and devotion to the highest scientific standards expanded and consolidated both fields of study. This rich and important biography, gracefully written by his wife and longtime professional colleague, records both his professional and his personal life.
He was seen by some colleagues as a major integrator of the different trends in psychology at a time of fragmentation; by others as an enlarger of the scope of psychology when it was too limited; and by still others as a humanizer of psychology when it was forgetting the needs of human beings. Intensely committed to these efforts as he was, the whole Gardner Murphy was seen by few of his peers. I have tried to describe his dimensions and some of what he meant to his generation and what he bequeathed to the next one.--From the Preface.
