註釋Although the medicalization of childbirth is essentially a twentieth century phenomenon, the assumption is prevalent in North America that births delivered by physicians in hospitals are the only safe ones. This paper shows, however, that the available research from Canada, the United States, Britain, and the Netherlands does not support this assertion.
