The Effect of Metabolites of Batrachochytrium Dendrobatidis on the Production of Violacein by Janthinobacterium Lividum
註釋There are many factors contributing to the decline of amphibians, including the disease chytridiomycosis, caused by the fungal pathogen, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). Bacteria such as Janthinobacterium lividum may serve to be an indirect line of defense for the amphibian host by converting the metabolites of Bd into less toxic compounds. This study seeks to understand the relationship between Bd's metabolites and J. lividum, which releases a secondary metabolite called violacein. We measured violacein production by J. lividum exposed to fungal metabolites by HPLC analysis and observed bacterial growth rates in relationship to violacein production. Kynurenine-treated J. lividum produced significantly more violacein and displayed the slowest rate of bacterial growth compared to J. lividum treated with other metabolites of Bd.
