註釋Travel accounts commence during Aug. 1901, when Smith left Valdosta, Georgia, for employment in Florida, apparently as a migrant farm worker; entries from this period note work with eggplants, strawberries, pineapples, celery, etc., names of fellow boarders at the rooming houses where he resided, freqent interuptions of work due to rain, visits to local Baptist churches, and entry, Sunday, 29 Sept. 1901, "walk over town with Mr. Frank Risker and visit Bar Room (Lord forgive me for it)"; earlier time periods discussed include a trip to visit W. Jasper Hanna during week of 14-17 Oct. 1897 (p. 64).
