The aim of this preliminary study was to investigate the factors governing methanogenesis and sulphate reduction in the Washburn and Octopus Hot Springs in the Yellowstone National Park. The rate of sulphate reduction and percentage mineralization of acetate to CH4 and CO2 was determined in Washburn Hot Springs, a thermal spring containing geothermal hydrogen (7,8). The chemical parameters of this environment were compared with those of Ink Pot Springs, a thermal spring associated with active sulphate reduction and a high population of a unique species of thermophilic sulphate reducing bacterium (9). Further, the effect of various inorganic nutrients on hydrogen production. 3H2 incorporation and methanogenesis associated with the anaerobic ecomposition of Octopus Spring algal-bacterial mat (5,8) was investigated.
