註釋Prepared for the 75th anniversary of the external studies program at the University of Queensland, this essay includes a brief introduction and an introductory account of the first four directors of the program. Background information provided in the introduction includes the establishment, educational philosophy, funding sources, and administrative organization of the University of Queensland, as well as a rationale for the founding of the external degree program in 1911. Institutional developments during the tenure of each of the directors are described together with biographical data on: (1) Thomas Edward Jones (1911-1937); (2) Thomas Thatcher (1938-1948); (3) Edward Colin D. Ringrose (1950-1957); and (4) Frank Jackson Olsen (1958-1971). Each biography includes the director's background and qualifications, method of his appointment, problems encountered upon appointment, his vision for the university, his targeted objectives, and his major accomplishments. A list of references completes the document. (JB)
