註釋Memoirs of a Jew born in 1921 in Stoubtsy, now in Belarus; pp. 37-104 relate his experiences in the Holocaust. In April 1941, while studying medicine in Minsk, Machtey was drafted into the Soviet army; in July he was taken prisoner by the Germans. As a medical orderly, he was not immediately killed, and he then posed as a Muslim. He was interned in various POW camps, mostly in Eastern Prussia, and sometimes worked as a doctor. Describes killings of Jews and others in some of the camps. In January 1945 Machtey was sent on a death march, but escaped, and was liberated by Soviet forces. He was interrogated by the KGB and sent to Siberia for one year. In 1949 he emigrated to Israel.
