註釋
We report experiments that investigate individuals' willingness to accept advice from artificial intelligence (AI)-based algorithms. We focus on the availability of data and the mechanism underpinning the algorithm as primary drivers of algorithm acceptance. Our findings indicate that providing users with the data used by the algorithm substantially reduces their willingness to accept advice from AI (substitution effect), but making them aware of the mechanism underpinning the algorithm does not further crowd out algorithm reliance. Participants' AI appraisal is higher when both data and mechanism are provided compared to when only data is provided (complementary effect). Most participants remain wary of accepting advice from AI algorithms, which is influenced by their cognitive ability and self-confidence levels. Our findings offer insight into the conditions that foster user trust in algorithms and have important implications for the market and economy. We conclude by discussing the welfare implications of introducing AI into society.
