In the last few years, competencies have come to the fore in the field of education. We are all familiar with the priorities that the world must address today: technological change, globalization, identity, inequality, poverty, conflicts and signs of ecological distress, to name just a few. In the face of these challenges, there is a widespread belief in the contribution of education in favour of social well-being and political stability, as well as productivity and competitiveness. Education is also a basic human right. There is a growing concern about the adequacy and quality of education, as well as the economic and social returns on educational expenditure.
