Theatre Ballistic Missile Defence, an Overview
註釋The importance of Theatre Missile Defence (TMD) is stressed by various sources. TMD aims at the prevention of the launch of Tactical Ballistic Missiles (TBMs) and Cruise Missiles (CMs), the destruction of TBMs and CMs in flight and the minimisation of the damage caused by TBMs and CMs after impact. Due to the proliferation of TBMs and CMs, their increasing range and the possibility that they have a nuclear, biological or chemical warhead, TMD is very important. This report provides an overview of the TBM threat. Furthermore, the four pillars of TMD are described, being Conventional Counter Force operations with as aim to prevent the launch of TBMs and CMs, Active Defence with as aim to destroy TBMs and CMs in flight, Passive Defence with as aim to minimise the damage of TBMs and CMs after impact, and Battle Management, Command Control, Communication, Computers, Intelligence and Early Warning with as aim to support the first three pillars. The report is concluded with an overview of models used in TMD related research, and an overview of TMD related projects carried out by TNO from 2001 until 2003.
