A GORGEOUS EDITION OF THE 'GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL'.
Herman Melville (1819-1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet of the American Renaissance period. Among his best-known works are Typee (1846), and his masterpiece: Moby-Dick (1851).
Our edition comes with illustrations after ink drawings by Rockwell Kent (1882-1971), the American painter, printmaker, illustrator, writer, sailor, adventurer, and voyager. It is inspired by the original early editions of the book. At the time, Rockwell Kent was a passionate fan of the novel, and his close and sympathetic reading of the text is wonderfully evident in the rich and copious illustrations. His fame was such and his contribution considered so great to this publication, that Melville's name was not even mentioned on the cover of the book (we added it, as you can see.)
The book's reputation was established only in the 20th century, after the centennial of its Author's birth. William Faulkner confessed he wished he had written the book himself, and D. H. Lawrence called it "one of the strangest and most wonderful books in the world" and "the greatest book of the sea ever written." Its opening sentence, "Call me Ishmael", is among world literature's most famous.
It is a must-read classic and it's a lovely paperback. Buy with confidence!
