註釋
"POETRYMODERN POETRY & THE TRADITION CLEANTH BROOKSModern poetry has often been called antitraditional. In this dis- tinguished critical work, however, modern poetry is defined as the resurgence of the great tradition of English poetry. Professor Brooks shows how the work of Auden, Eliot, Yeats, and other outstanding modern poets resembles Metaphysical poetry in attitude and struc- ture. He demonstrates how these poets have re-established the line of poetic development which was obscured in the seventeenth century when the creative intellect turned toward scientific ration- alism. In "A Retrospective Introduction," written for this Galaxy Book edition, Professor Brooks considers the course taken by poetry since the first publication of this book. He has broadened his defini- tion to include the essentially pro-Romantic trend of the nineteen- fifties and 'sixties, and its contribution to the "critical revolution" in modern poetry."Mr. Brooks offers this as the consolidation of a critical position that many writers have been building up, what I suppose would be called the intellectualist position, and it is a masterly piece of work." WILLIAM EMPSON, Poetry"This is the work of a scholar who is sensitive to every nuance of feeling and every change of pitch. Mr. Brooks is a probing analyst, but he is not a pedant. His work, reflecting his subject, is allusive rather than simple and straightforward, complex but clear."LOUIS UNTERMEYER, Saturday Review of LiteratureCleanth Brooks is Gray Professor of Rhetoric at Yale University.
