註釋
My study analyzes notions of culture, tradition and identity within the context of Makah and Nuu-chah-nulth whaling. I advance the understanding of these concepts by defining them within a process of change and adaptation. Whereas scholars tend to focus on cultural change as assimilation, I develop our knowledge and perception of change within Native societies by positing that cultures and traditions are not static and fixed, but are fluid and adaptive. I see tradition as part of an ongoing process of modification and adjustment that allows a culture to maintain itself within a dynamic system of constant alterations and adjustments. Makah and Nuu-chah-nulth whaling ceased in the 1920s but was revived in 1999. Even though Makah and Nuu-chah-nulth whaling ended, the tradition was maintained through a process of rearticulation, demonstrating the flexibility and fluidity of Native culture and traditions. Today, the whaling tradition remains a central aspect of Makah and Nuu-chah-nulth identities, with whaling providing a symbol for tribal resiliency, adaptability and cultural survival.
