註釋This volume presents the rock art of primitive man as found around the world. The book presents a brief, lucid, excellently illustrated introduction to what is presently known and currently thought. Physical and cultural anthropology, related to Pleistocene geology, provide a framework for the several cultures identified by archaeologists, and their examination calls forth explanations of dating methods (Carbon 14 plus lesser-known, very recent ones) and other scientific corollaries; the materials and techniques of the artists, to the extent ascertainable; and the very special problems of picturing -- especially photographing -- the art works. The paintings and engravings materialize, concretely and in context, and the conclusion is that we have a great deal to learn. A helpful glossary and index complete a careful, thoughtful presentation, unique among juveniles and not matched in this compact form for adults.
