Homeric Stitchings
註釋A study of the epic-style biblical poem composed in the early fifth century by Eudocia, wife of Theodosius II. The author argues that the Centos, built on verses taken directly from the Iliad and Odyssey, have been consistently underrated in terms of communicative power and artistry. He argues that the Centos were written with performance in mind and relied upon the audience being intimately familiar with both Homer and the Bible. Applying the techniques of formulaic analysis pioneered by Milman Parry and Albert Lord, he explores how the Centos grew out of mnemonic traditions that perpetuated the performance of the Homeric poems and how the understanding of that tradition is a prerequisite to the appreciation of the Centos.
