Jonas Halsted (ca. 1610-1683), son of Abraham and Susan Whitley Halsted, may have been born in Yorkshire, England. He may have settled first at Stratford, Connecticut, before moving to Long Island, where he was one of the proprietors of Hempstead in 1644. He was the father of at least four children, born 1633-1744. Descendants listed, chiefly some of the descendants of Caleb Halsted (1721-1784) of the fifth generation, lived in New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, and elsewhere.
