Dual National
註釋In the waning months of the Franco regime, plots abound as the Fascists in Spain scheme to retain power. On the left, the terrorist group ETA has launched a series of deadly attacks against the military. Phillip Doudican, reporter for a news journal headquartered in Paris, returns to Madrid at the request of his former editor there, to cover the proximate leadership transition and the growing terrorist campaign. He soon discovers, however, that his time away has brought profound changes to the lives of his old friends. Clare Turling, a beautiful former lover for whom he retains an ardent passion, has become an unlikely success in Spain's insular fashion industry. Arne Keuhl, Doudican's once and now again editor, who has lived in Spain for more than thirty years, suddenly finds himself in increasing danger. When Carrero Blanco, the Spanish President of Government is assassinated, all three begin the search for Javier Lhande, a French Basque and Clare's current lover who holds the key to the assassination. "Dual National" is the story of Doudican's search for Lhande, and the explosive legacies of betrayed love and the growing terrorism in which he becomes entangled.
