註釋Authors Michael Rodway, Wayne Campbell, and Moira Lemon have just published the first of four volumes of an updated seabird catalogue for BC. The introductory, 298-page volume, Seabird Colonies of British Columbia: A Century of Changes, recounts the history of seabird work in BC, summarizes provincial populations, provides in-depth species accounts, and discusses threats and conservation measures for seabirds in BC. Upcoming volumes 2-4 will provide detailed histories of every known seabird colony in BC. The book goes far beyond what is typically included in such a scientific document. Though it will be an essential reference for anyone involved in seabird research or management in BC, it will also appeal to a wider audience interested in the natural history of the BC coast or in the exploits of those who have conducted surveys on the remote islands where seabirds nest. The text is profusely illustrated with about 300 photographs and drawings and includes many anecdotes that recount experiences of surveyors and relate interesting details about seabird natural history and conservation. Local BC wildlife and landscape artist Mark Hobson has also donated images of his artwork that are included as colour plates. It is a unique work. The book is entirely a volunteer effort. Its publication is supported by the non-profit Biodiversity Centre for Wildlife Studies located in Victoria. More information about the publication can be found on their website, http://www.wildlifebc.org.
