註釋The story of a group of pregnant girls at Palmyra, a home for unmarried mothers in the 1950s and 60s. The novel is fictitious but based on the author's experience. The individual stories of 14 girls told by a 16-year-old unwed pregnant girl called Jane are presented in diary form. It deals with a nine month period from 1951 to 1952 when Jane lived and worked at the attached hospital to pay her board at Palmyra. The many and varied experiences of the girls gives some insight into the reasons mothers relinquished their children for adoption during the 50s and 60s.
