Approach to Prophylaxis and Treatment of Pertussis
註釋This paper is an update of the systematic review published in 2007 and updated in 2009 titled Antibiotics for whooping cough (pertussis) from Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews by Altunaiji SM, Kukurozociv RH, Curtis NC, and Massie J. The findings of this systematic review showed that antibiotic erythromycin is the standard of care for treatment of pertussis and treatment of household contacts remained controversial. Further research of this topic was conducted due to the increase in prevalence and the increased awareness of adult population acting as reservoirs threatening the infant population. The updated research indicates that erythomycin, azithromycin, clarithromycin, and trimethroprim-sulfamethoxazole are equally effective for eradication of Bordetella pertussis. However, recent studies indicate azithromycin is the superior agent due to highest compliance rates, short duration of treatment and fewest reports of adverse side effects. It is imperative to treat household contacts as they may act as reservoirs for those who are most susceptible.
