Leonardo's precept 'decoro', provided a sixteenth-century model for analysis of portraits of Medici women. Its distinctive elements offered guidelines for the artist to effect portrayals, emphasizing appropriate dignity of rank, sex, age, setting and circumstances, with corresponding dress and 'action'.
