註釋Louisville held a prominent spot on the late eighteenth-century urban frontier, and as the city grew, so did the need for an institution of higher learning. In 1798, state-chartered trustees began raising funds for what would become the Jefferson Seminary, which operated until 1829. A few years later a medical school was established, and part of the seminary property was used to fund what became Louisville College. While that academy also perished, the medical school prospered. Soon a law school was added, and the institution now known as the University of Louisville was born. Book jacket.
