Henry Alexander Wise
註釋This collection consists of correspondence of Wise, 1831-1860, which was removed from his office by Lucy Chase (1822-1909) during the occupation of his farm by Union Forces (see collection description for Chase Family Papers). Included are requests or copies of his congressional speeches, letters from friends and constituents relative to requiring his aid in legal matters, and complaints concerning the firing of a postmaster in Wheeling, [West] Virginia, due to the Van Buren "spoils system" in 1838. There are also letters to Rep. Wise from friends concerning the political scene in Virginia and the nation in 1839: e.g., the need to support the presidential bid of William Henry Harrison (1773-1841) and the "persecution" of Henry Clay (1777-1852) by various Democrats; the needs of Occohanock County, Virginia, such as a new post office, are also discussed.
