Abstract: "Complex evaluation functions arise naturally in the solution of many problems, particularly those in artificial intelligence. The ability to solve problems that involve sophisticated evaluations depends largely on how quickly and how well these evaluations can be performed. This paper describes special-purpose hardware that utilizes high levels of integration to compute complex evaluation functions very quickly. A key property of this hardware is that it is programmable. That is, the function to be computed is specified by dynamically writing configuration information into the hardware. This flexibility allows a wide variety of evaluations to be performed by the same hardware and provides the ability to dynamically tune the evaluation function
