China and the Chinese
註釋Herbert Allen Giles (1845-1935) spent several years as a diplomat in China. He was appointed as Cambridge University's second professor of Chinese in 1897. Giles when on to publish research papers pertaining to the Chinese language, literature, philosophy and history. In 1902, Professor Giles gave a series of lectures at Cambridge University. The purpose of these lectures was to encourage a wider, more systematic study of China and its culture, and to encourage new students to enter the field. While many of the observations are just as relevant today, others will remind us how much China has changed since the period of the Manchu Qing dynasty in which these lectures were written.
