This book addresses critical issues in the development of our understanding of the abuse and neglect of children with disabilities. Disabilities dispose children for abuse and neglect. Just as the care and education of children with disabilities require unique knowledge and skills, so does the consideration of their abuse and neglect. The book is based on data generated from an analysis of true stories about the abuse and neglect of children with disabilities as well as from an analysis of the literature in this area. The chapters include quantitative and qualitative data generated from cases of real children, in real contexts. The book invites readers to analyze and reflect on their own awareness of the issues involved. The analyses and final chapter on prevention will provide professionals and caregivers with a new understanding of their roles in universal, secondary and tertiary level prevention that is targeted, focused, data-based, and designed to prevent the abuse and neglect of children with disabilities.
