Proposal for a Cesium-137 Contaminated Old-field Site for Experimental Studies in Radiation Ecology
註釋Insect studies will include: (10 radiation effects on population sizes and growth rates for major insect species, (2) radiation effects on community structure and food-chain organization, (3) energy flow and movement of materials through insect food chains, and (4) soil-arthropod communities in contaminated and control areas. Techniques similar to those used on White Oak Lake bed will be employed, except where improved techniques for population estimates can be substituted for box-trap and hand-picking methods. Laboratory techniques for whole-body counting and maintenance under controlled environmental conditions have been developed previously, as have respiration and calorimetry techniques. Completion of the suggested studies should require three summers. Botanical studies will include uptake, distribution, and seasonal variation of Cs]137 in the plant species. Radiation effects studies also are projected.
