The Mintek carbon-activity analyser, which utilizes the technique of anodic-stripping voltammetry (ASV), is discussed. This technique of quantitative analysis for a metal cation involves the plating of the analyte metal onto the cathode. The current is then reversed, and the plated metal is stripped from the electrode. Design details of the analyser are presented and the various steps in its operation are examined.
