註釋
In 1920, Joaquin Buitrago, a photographer at the mental hospital La Castaneda, believes to have identified one of the patients. Matilda Burgos, as a prostitute he met years before. He manages to obtain her medical record, from which he'll learn that she was a country girl adopted by her uncle, and that she led a peaceful life until she came into contact with revolutionary activists. Eventually she was left to wander without direction and try all types of jobs. The photographer is convinced that Matilda and he must begin a life together, and so they try to regain their liberty and build a future among the ruins of their common defeat of morality and reason. Rivera Garza obtained three of the top literary prizes in Mexico with this extraordinary novel that won plaudits from the likes of Carlos Fuentes.
