Subterfuge - SynopsisOh reader beware! Subterfuge is about the decay of a brain that is affected by organic decay. It establishes itself in a place where nothing is quite as it seems because the mind of the author is just not working as well as it once used to. The book begins in quite a gloomy place. The main character is called Kit has been possessed by his former pet and become increasingly unwell. Kit has now gone totally blind, his mind simply does not function, he cannot speak anymore and he cannot move unaided. He has no memory and is finding it increasingly difficult to breathe. We find him living in a care home for the elderly where no-one visits him anymore and it is about as bleak a situation that you can imagine for him. This story tells us a little bit about his life, from his childhood to his end. Along the way Kit has tried to remember all the things that were important in his life but he has been possessed by a small black and white cat and things became increasingly confused for him.Writing about the effect of any degenerative illness is never likely to be a fully happy journey. In this story Kit tries hard to make sure everything is in the right order and that you too will develop a love of old cultures. When the book started Kit firmly believed that he had a plot but somewhere along the way it might have been lost.At some point we discover that Kit is follows a spiritual journey and he seeks inspiration and wisdom from ancient religions and belief systems, but these become increasingly confusing for him. In Subterfuge Kit seeks to tell a message of hope and inspiration. Unfortunately, things do not go quite as well as he hoped and he became a bit frustrated. However, in a surprising discovery he has been given some revelations and feels it is his duty to share these with the world Unfortunately Kit does get a bit distracted in his storytelling. The journey he takes us on does involve some references to historical matters and aspects of science and, if nothing else, the reader will find out the real reason why cats purr. The book soon takes us into a convoluted vision Kit had about his family in Belgium. However, as he does not think that he ever actually went there that was a bit confusing for him. The situation there became quite unpleasant and the story takes on a slightly happier turn when he moves to Totnes in South Devon in England. He finds himself writing about a number of different situations, some of which must have been invented. Surely nothing in this book actually can be true, can it? So the man is becoming increasing affected by the thoughts of the cat and somewhere along the line the imaginary cat takes over the story, but the change is quite imperceptible. At the very end the author has a sudden realisation of the reality of his situation and he achieves a merciful release and a grasp of the inevitable futility of existence. Subterfuge does ask the reader a number of questions of the reader along the way. At its surface level it is a quite confusing little book. Because it is considering the effects of a serious health condition Subterfuge is not a book that anyone should actually like. Despite this, Kit hopes that you find something to interest you in this strange little book and, because he is always a very polite small black and white cat, he thanks you for your interest.
