A Study of the Renaissance Madrigal Comedy
註釋The madrigal comedies examined in this study, the complete repertoire of such works as far as can be determined, were written only in Italy, and there by only four composers: Alessandro Striggio, Giovanni Croce, Orazio Vecchi, and Adriano Banchieri. The total number of known madrigal comedies is fifteen; these were published during a period of sixty-one years, from 1567 to 1628. The comedies range in voicing from three vocal parts to ten; the most common being three or five voices. Only one comedy, La Prudenza giovenile by Banchieri, was designated to be acted--the others were to be performed without any staging at all. The madrigal comedies are essentially a cappella compositions; in only four comedies is it indicated that instruments should accompany the singers.
