註釋Abstract: Despite a call from researchers in the field, a dearth remains in the research literature regarding what factors may protect women against eating disorders and eating disorder symptomatology. Although a substantial body of research exists regarding risk factors of eating disorder symptomatology, few empirical investigations regarding resilience have been completed. The present study sought to empirically examine whether certain variables moderate the relation between sociocultural pressures for thinness and eating disorder symptomatology. Although sociocultural pressure for thinness is a strong predictor of disordered eating patterns among women, a majority report pressure for thinness, but do not concomitantly report severe levels of eating disorder symptomatology. Perhaps additional variables, then, interact with pressure for thinness to influence its relation to eating disorder symptomatology. Three theoretically relevant variables were examined as to whether they weakened this relation within a sample (N = 397) of college women. As anticipated, unconditional positive self-regard moderated the relation between a particular subset of sociocultural pressure (i.e., family pressure) for thinness and eating disorder symptomatology.
